Untitled Abstract Art by Richard Silva

An original untitled abstract work by California artist Richard Silva, born in Fresno in 1939. The composition layers bold passages of black, white, gray, and earthy brown with expressive marks, gestural lines, and heavily worked surfaces. Its graphic forms and raw textures reflect Silva’s intuitive approach to abstraction and mixed media.

A first-generation Portuguese American, Silva moved to San Francisco in 1970 to pursue painting, studying at the Academy of Art under Joan Brown and later at the San Francisco Art Institute. His practice incorporates materials such as house paint, charcoal, torn paper, and found objects, with earlier works often revisited and transformed over time. Silva joined Fig Tree Gallery in 1999, where he presented his first solo exhibition.
