DESCRIPTION

1967 Korean Modernist Owl Artwork with Provenance

A fantastic 1967 modernist owl artwork with an especially compelling documented history. The stylized owl is rendered in bold geometric forms in ochre, gold, gray, cream, and black, giving the piece a distinctly mid-century graphic quality. A small artist’s seal appears within the composition.

The handwritten inscription on the reverse dates the piece to November 24, 1967, Kimpo Air Base, Korea, and records that it was presented to Sir Thomas Morey of Oxford by Brother Ken Berger in appreciation of his devotion and efforts on behalf of the Mu Upsilon fraternity.

Beyond its striking design, the personal inscription gives the artwork a wonderful sense of place and history. Presented in its period frame with a muted rose-toned surround, it is a particularly interesting piece for collectors of mid-century art, Korean decorative arts, owls, or works with documented provenance.
